The Stress Talk – Student workshop
Stress comes in waves, but is a phenomenon that is present in all phases of life,
be it as a child or as a full grown adult. What changes is the intensity and the
ability to work through stress as we grow through life. The developmental period
of adolescence is full of turmoil, influenced by bodily changes, behavioral and
temperamental variations, therefore the nature of stress experienced as a
teenager is much different than other periods in life.
Academics, social challenges, hormonal changes and the confusion of
transitioning from a child to adult makes it difficult for teenagers to identify and
work through stress effectively. It is important for teenagers to develop healthy
coping mechanisms to manage stress, hence “The Stress Talk” workshop was
conducted for 7th grade students to help them understand Stress, identify
stressors and tackle them robustly.
The workshop began with an introduction to stress followed by the various
physiological, behavioral symptoms that can guide individuals to identify and
recognise stress. The session proceeded with discussions about psychological
influences of stress, understanding ‘negative thought patterns’ that build stress
and methods to break free from them. Children were explained in detail about
how to deal with stressors and stressful events. They participated in
stress-relieving group activity as the workshop came to a close.
Being a community of educators, mental health professionals and parents
working hand in hand for the upliftment of our students, it is essential to
recognize and address teenage stress. The longer we prolong it, the greater it
goes unmanaged, negatively impacting both a child’s physical and mental health.
